expungent

A couple of friends were joking before i left that i was going to turn into a pretentious ass when i came to oxford just due to its reputation and such. I didn't think much of it, thinking i could resist the temptation to do so by pure strength of will.

I am beginning to doubt my resolve though as i become more accustomed to regular life around me, every aspect seemingly with the inherent telos of grooming the ordinary common man who worked construction all summer out of me and grooming a large dose of pretentiousness in its stead.

As a new Oxfordian (i'm not exactly sure that's what i'm called, but i rather like it), i was given an email account through the oxford system. And it's not just any email system either, this is a system designed exclusively for Oxford. My email address ends in four different designators "stx.ox.ac.uk" and the other one they gave me does the same "orinst.ox.ac.uk". Obviously the most important being the '.ox' standing for dotoxford. standing for 'i'm smarter than you' in plain english.

but where i really noticed the pretentiality the most in my email system was its method of deleting emails. Rather than asking "delete emails?" when you go to delete them it asks "purge deleted messages?" and then upon pressing the "i doth agree to purge the aforementioned messages" it replies with the phrase, "successfully expunged." Who says that?!

i do. because i'm that frickin' pretentious.

elitism

I'm the only hit on google for--

percent "people die virgins"

funny thing is, that's how someone found my blog.

i think i'm ok with that.

that one place, over there.

So, i'm going to school in a monthish. The problem is, where i am going is so difficult to understand. Because it doesn't just have one name. It has multiple names, all of which probably have some complex relationship to each other. Why is it called Great Britain? What's the difference between that and the United Kingdom? And where the heck does merry old england fit into this equation? I think i might dub it a new name. I was thinking of something like U.Kritainland, or Englainuk. The difficulty lies though in the fact that i will look stupider by using my new combo name instead of calling it by the improper name. So, if you know what it is supposed to really be called, let me know. I don't want to look like a nincompoop (as much as possible) when i arrive in that place.

So, regardless of the complexity of it's name, I'm going to a small island off the coast of europe to study classical and medieval islamic history for the next two years.

and i leave in less than three weeks.
